It is believed to be due to changes in the blood vessels around the lining of the brain cavity. Many foods and medications can both cause those blood vessels to constrict, and to open up again leading to the throbbing type of pain seen with most migraine headaches. It has been long known that caffeine in foods (chocolate) and beverages can be used to help treat acute migraine but can also lead to recurrence. Caffeine should be taken in limited amounts on a daily basis. Additional reported triggers include food preservatives like the NITRITES used meat preservation, MSG used to keep fresh foods from spoiling, and natural substances in aged cheeses. Although many migraine sufferers tolerate small amounts of these, it is a good idea to limit especially when headaches are frequent. Most of the time, true food allergies that we find by allergy testing will cause skin and gastrointestinal symptoms, not just headache.
Many migraine sufferers will notice worsening headaches when they are sleeping poorly, such as when seasonal allergies are flaring. At that time, it’s important to take enough daily allergy medication to keep the oculonasal allergy symptoms in full control. Sometimes, we might need to add additional medications if what you are taking is not enough. Allergy shots can be a good strategy long term if seasonal flares in your migraines are frequent.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”2791″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text el_class=”vc_hidden-xs vc_hidden-lg vc_hidden-md vc_hidden-sm”]
