The Importance Of Patch Testing For Our Patients In Charlotte, NC

It is very complicated to determine what may be causing skin irritations. For many people rashes, itchy patches, and even inflamed areas of the skin are caused by specific allergens. This is a condition known as contact dermatitis and determining the triggers for the skin irritation is best done through the use of a medical technique known as patch testing.

We are able to provide our clients in Charlotte, NC with patch testing services that will help to pinpoint the allergens that are triggering the allergic reaction. Your doctor will talk to you about the test and will also provide you with information on what you will need to do.

Prior to Patch Testing in Charlotte, NC

Patch testing is very simple and requires very little special accommodations on the part of our patients. However, prior to scheduling the test your doctor will talk to you about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you may be taking and, if they may interfere with the test, you doctor will advise you on limiting their use for a specific time before and during the test.

The Process

At your scheduled appointment a large patch that is pre-treated with small dots of known allergens will be applied to the skin of your back. Depending on the number of possible allergens being tested several patches can be applied at the same time.

The testing material is then sealed with hypoallergenic medical tape and left in place for 48 hours. During this time you can go about your normal life but care should be taken to keep the back area dry to provide the most conclusive results.

At the second appointment the doctor will remove the patch testing material and check for signs of irritation or rashes under the small areas containing the known allergens. This will allow you, and your doctor in Charlotte, NC to determine just what your skin is reacting to.
